Planning your first paddleboarding lesson in Tri-Cities, WA? There’s nothing quite like stepping onto a paddleboard for the first time. The feel of the water beneath you, the open sky above, and the excitement of trying something new—it’s an experience you’ll always remember. At Aqueous SUP, we believe your first guided session should be more than just an introduction. It should be the start of something incredible.
Whether you’re brand new to the sport or brushing up on basics, a little preparation can make your first session smooth, fun, and unforgettable. Here’s what you’ll want to know before you hit the water:
What to Bring and Wear: Paddleboard Prep Tips
Comfort is key when you’re starting out. Choose clothing designed for the water—something you can move in and don’t mind getting wet. Rashguards, board shorts, or quick-dry athletic wear all work well. On cooler days, lightweight layers or a farmer-style wetsuit can help keep you warm.
Don’t forget your sunscreen, a hat, and polarized sunglasses with a retainer strap. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. It’s also smart to keep a towel and dry clothes in your car for after your session—you’ll thank yourself later.
If you’re bringing your own gear, great! Using your own board and paddle builds confidence and comfort. Just make sure to pack a board, adjustable paddle, Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD), leash, and whistle.
Renting gear instead? No problem. If you add a rental at booking, we’ll provide everything: board, paddle, PFD, leash, and whistle. You’ll be ready to go from the moment you arrive.

What to Expect: Your First Paddleboarding Lesson
Your first session focuses on building a strong foundation in a welcoming, low-pressure setting. We’ll begin on land with a short orientation where you’ll get familiar with your gear, learn basic safety tips, and go over how to paddle.
Then, we’ll head to the water. You’ll start by kneeling on your board to find your balance. When you’re ready, we’ll help you stand up with confidence. Along the way, you’ll learn how to hold your paddle, adjust your stance, and use key strokes to move and steer.
We keep class sizes small—usually up to four paddlers per instructor. This allows for plenty of personal coaching and one-on-one support. We’ll move at your pace, answer your questions, and make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.
If you’ve already booked our SUP Basics Course or SUP Safety Basics Course, you’re in the right place. These sessions are designed to help you feel confident, prepared, and safe as you start your paddleboarding journey.
Expect a mix of learning, encouragement, and fun. Even if you’ve never paddled before, you’ll leave the water feeling proud of what you’ve accomplished.
No Experience? No Problem—We’ve Got You
You don’t need prior experience to try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Our guided sessions are beginner-friendly and open to all skill levels. We meet you where you are—whether you’re brand new or just brushing up on basics.
At Aqueous SUP, we believe paddleboarding is about more than standing up. It’s about finding your rhythm, connecting with nature, and discovering what you’re capable of. Every paddler’s journey is unique, and we’re here to support yours.
