Lessons from Florida: Insights from My Training Camp Experience

Setting goals charts a course for growth and deeper connection. In November, I traveled to Florida to refine my skills and immerse myself in learning. Beyond technical improvement, I gained a renewed sense of purpose and a reminder of the power of continual learning. This journey inspired the Paddle With Purpose series—here’s how it all began.

Why I Signed Up

My main goal in attending this training camp was to refine my paddling stroke and improve overall efficiency and endurance on the water. I’d been working on fine-tuning my stroke mechanics across different paddling disciplines, and was looking to accelerate my progress. Beyond personal performance, I wanted to learn from Seychelle SUP and Michael Booth as coaches—to see how they break down techniques, provide feedback, and adapt their approaches to different paddlers. This insight would not only elevate my own paddling but also enhance my ability to guide my clients as an instructor.

Having previously worked with Seychelle through her online coaching programs, I knew how impactful her guidance could be. As a multiple World Champion and Guinness World Record holder, Seychelle’s holistic approach focuses on body mechanics and efficiency. Michael Booth, also a multiple World Champion with years of experience, is renowned for blending power, endurance, and strategy. Learning from both of them together was an incredible opportunity I couldn’t miss. We also had a couple days with Maddi Leblanc too, assisting with camp!

A Transformative Learning Experience & Coaching Insights

Nathan Benderson Park, with its world-class facilities, was the perfect backdrop. The energy of training at a location preparing for the upcoming ICF World Championships added an extra layer of excitement, reinforcing the high-performance environment. Over the course of the camp, we worked through technique and strategy, making small but meaningful adjustments that had a significant impact.

One of the most valuable aspects was receiving direct feedback from both Seychelle and Michael, each bringing their unique coaching styles and perspectives. This allowed for a more well-rounded understanding of technique, helping me refine movement patterns in a way that felt natural and sustainable. Through their coaching, I gained several insights that helped refine my technique.

Some key takeaways for me included:

  • Paddle stroke refinement: Focusing on pulling the blade out sooner to maintain efficiency, engaging my core earlier, and using my legs more for power.
  • Hand positioning: Lowering my bottom hand slightly for better leverage, widening my grip to engage my lats more effectively, opening up my shoulders.
  • Relaxation and flow: Loosening up my shoulders and maintaining a strong but fluid posture to avoid unnecessary tension.

More than just technical skills, the camp taught me to trust myself. Letting go of over-control and allowing my natural rhythm to flow was a game-changer. It’s not just about paddling faster; it’s about paddling smarter and with intention.

A Sense of Community

Beyond the technical skills, the camp fostered an incredible sense of camaraderie. Sharing the water with a supportive group of paddlers was both inspiring and motivating, as we pushed our limits together in a positive feedback loop of encouragement. The friendships and shared experiences reignited my excitement for the sport.

This camp reminded me of the importance of embracing the collective energy of a community that loves and respects the sport and the environment. From swapping tips and sharing stories to enjoying the beauty of Sarasota, Florida, the sense of belonging was undeniable and deeply inspiring.

Looking Ahead

As I returned to the Tri-Cities, I felt inspired, energized, and focused. The camp reinforced my commitment to consistent training and embracing the journey of growth. With clear goals for the year, I’m blending the technical skills I’ve gained with a renewed emphasis on endurance and strength.

This experience wasn’t just about improving my paddling—it was about growing as an instructor and mentor. The insights I’ve gained will help me guide my clients with greater clarity and confidence. I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned with the paddling community.

If you’re thinking about refining your skills, joining a training camp, or seeking personalized instruction, I highly recommend it. These opportunities not only improve technique but deepen your connection to the sport and your paddling community. Take the leap—you won’t regret it!
