Essential Gear Check: Is Your SUP Setup Ready for a New Season?

A new paddleboarding season is on the horizon, bringing fresh opportunities to explore the water, refine your skills, and embrace new adventures. But before you dive in, take a moment to assess your gear. A well-maintained setup ensures both safety and enjoyment on the water.

Whether your board has been stored for the winter or you’re looking to upgrade your setup, now is the perfect time to get everything in order so you’re ready to launch when the temperatures rise.

1. Board and Paddle: Foundation of Your Setup

Your board is your most essential piece of equipment, and it deserves a little attention before hitting the water. Here’s what to check and how to fix any issues:

  • Dings, cracks, or soft spots – Small dings on hard boards can often be sealed with an epoxy repair kit, while larger cracks or soft spots might need professional attention. For inflatables, check for air leaks by inflating the board and listening for hissing or using soapy water—bubbles indicate a leak. Minor leaks can be patched, but failing seams may mean it’s time for a new board.
  • Traction pad condition – A peeling or worn pad can make your ride slippery and unstable. Secure minor peeling with marine-grade adhesive, but for major wear, consider replacing the deck pad entirely.
  • Fin attachment – Ensure your fin is secure. For screw-in fins, check for rust or wear and replace if needed. Quick-release fins should lock firmly in place. A cracked fin box may require a repair kit or professional fix.
  • Paddle check – Inspect the shaft for cracks or loose connections. If you spot damage, especially in carbon fiber paddles, replacement is safest. Ensure adjustable paddles lock securely and check for chips or cracks in the blade that could affect performance.

Board Storage Tip: If your board was stored over the winter, ensure it’s in good shape. For the best care, store hard boards off the ground with padding to protect them, and keep inflatables partially inflated or rolled loosely to prevent creases.

2. Safety First: Leash and PFD Check

  • Leash condition – Your leash is a lifeline. Inspect for frays, test the Velcro, and replace any worn-out parts. For river paddling, consider a quick-release system.
  • PFD (Personal Flotation Device) – If you use an inflatable belt pack, check the CO2 cartridge’s expiration date. For traditional PFDs, inspect straps and buckles for wear. If the material shows UV damage (fading or cracking), it’s time for a replacement.

3. Clothing and Accessories: Dress for Success

Paddleboarding isn’t just about the board—it’s about dressing smart for the conditions.

  • Cold-weather layers – If paddling before it fully warms up, neoprene booties, gloves, and a wetsuit or drysuit may be necessary. For more tips on staying safe and comfortable in cold conditions, check out our Winter Paddling 101 blog.
  • Sun protection – Even in cooler months, UV exposure is real. A hat, sunglasses with a retainer strap, and water-resistant sunscreen go a long way. UV-protectant clothing, like rashguards with UPF 50, offers an added layer of sun defense.

4. Extras That Enhance the Experience

  • Dry Bag & Dry Box – Dry bags are great for spare layers and snacks, but they can trap heat. A dry box is a safer choice for phones, keys, and battery packs.
  • Waterproof phone case – A must-have for safety and capturing those first paddles of the season.
  • GoPro or Action Camera – For capturing SUP adventures without risking your phone in open water.
  • Hydration & fuel – Staying hydrated is just as important on the water as it is on land. Bring a water bottle and snacks for longer outings.

5. Use This Time to Prepare for a Strong Start

While the waterways may be too cold for many paddlers right now, this is the perfect season to prepare. Take stock of your gear, research any upgrades you’ve been considering, and make a checklist for any necessary repairs or replacements. You can also use this time to brush up on safety knowledge, plan future paddle routes, or even start cross-training to build strength and endurance for when the season kicks off.
